Horse Training Tips: Lead Your Horse

Company (horse, Hanshin Racecourse)
Image via Wikipedia

Horse riders will of course see saddle training as the ultimate goal, but first it’s necessary to complete the groundwork. You will need to take your horse from trailer or barn to the tack area, tack up, and then you’ll ride. Not much point in teaching your horse point B, the saddle riding part, if there’s no way to get there from point A is there?. Your horse will need to cooperate with you so the two of you can act as a team. This cooperation begins with your ability to approach, catch, and halter him first. Then you’ll need to lead your horse about with a halter and a lead rope.

With the primary objective of safety in mind, your horse needs to learn what is acceptable behaviour. Pulling against the lead rope, for example, is natural behaviour for a horse which you will need to teach him not to do. Whoever is leading needs to be secure that their personal space will not be invaded by the horse. Many an accident has occurred as a direct result of inattention to the importance of teaching your horse basic safety manners before attempting anything more advanced. Whilst a good equine insurance policy may cover you for accidents that happen in training, it’s obviously far more preferable not to have to find this out!

The three Ps of horse training – patience, persistence and positive reinforcement – come into play when leading your horse. Having already accomplished haltering, it is likely that you have already discovered the effectiveness of the three Ps.

Ideally you need to begin lead training with your horse when he is still a foal. Don’t leave it too late to begin teaching ground manners – a very young horse doesn’t need to know about saddles and riding yet, so you have time to focus on these important basics. The young horse will need to cooperate for farrier and vet visits, as well as for the various people moving about the yard, stables or paddock.

If you’re lucky enough to have the dam on site, the foal will copy the behaviours of the dam. Don’t worry if the dam is not present, as it works as well with any horse which the foal spends time with. Young horses naturally learn from the older ones in the herd. For example, you don’t need to teach a horse in the pasture how to graze or go to the water and drink. They watch the other horses to learn these things. If your student is older, you can still use another horse’s example by haltering and leading the other horse first. Your student will be watching, as they do notice everything that happens around them, particularly if it involves other horses in their own herd.

A good place to start is to lead a more experienced horse along with the foal; lead them simultaneously with you in the middle. The safest place for you to stand is to the left of your student’s shoulder, with the older horse to your left. A young horse could suddenly decide to bolt or to kick his heels, so make sure that you don’t wrap the lead rope around your hand or anywhere else that makes you vunerable. The last thing you need at this stage is complicating the process with an injury for which you may need to claim on your horse insurance.

If you have a calm horse which you think the foal will follow you could also use the pony method. This is done by simply towing the student horse behind using a longer lead rope. It makes sense in fact to teach the lead in this way, as it’s natural for a young horse to follow an elders lead.

You will need to fall back only on the three Ps of horse training in the absence of other horses to help the youngster learn what to do. It will still be viable, but may take a bit longer for your horse to understand what you’d like him to do.

After satisfactory progress, it’s time to try it alone. Again, standing to the left of your young horse’s shoulder and with both of you looking straight ahead, gently walk forward and as you step out, tug very gently forward, then release any pressure on the rope as soon as the horse makes any motion to go forward. Understanding that release is a reward to your horse is a valuable tip used by professional trainers. It tells him that he’s doing things right.

After you have him walking with you in straight lines with success, try turning slightly to the left, maintaining the space bubble between you. If he crowds you, use your right hand to push him out away from you and hold your arm out to the appropriate distance. Then try turning to the right with the same safety distance between the two of you, still using your right hand to guide him into the correct zone. Remember to release pressure on the lead rope and reward him every time he shows a step in the right direction.

Lead training requires large reserves of patience. Stick with it and you’ll soon see big improvements. Do a little work every day if you can and this will put you closer to the day you can finally saddle up for a ride.

Keeping sick or injured horses warm is another use for horse rugs. The types of horse rugs used for warmth are often called heavy weight turnout rugs.

Cooler horse rugs are the ones that are used to cool a horse off after exercise or too much heat from the sun. Cooler horse rugs assist in removing excess moisture from the horse.

Spice Up Your Relationship With Your Horse!

horses

How long have you been dreaming of Horseback riding?

Have you been considering taking Horseback riding lessons?

There’s an old saying:

Is Now the Time?

If a horse is in a lot of pain and distress, due to an incurable injury or disease, the only correct action is to put it down as quickly and as humanely as possible. However, in some cases the decision is not as clear.

For example, a horse may be in permanent pain but quite capable of happily living with it. This was the case of a draft horse pensioned with us, who had a chronic case of laminitis which made walking painful (especially over hard surfaces). As an elderly horse, he also had dental issues which made chewing uncomfortable. However, by supplementing his diet with soft food and giving him maximum time on soft pasture, his discomfort was minimised. He was a stoic horse, who seemed little bothered by pain, and obviously enjoyed life. He would trot around the pasture with his head held high and come to us for cuddles. Although retired, he was active in the pasture and obviously enjoyed life despite the constant pain in his feet and when he ate.

For me, the question is not how much pain the horse is in, but rather is he still happy and enjoying life. One can tell this not only by how the horse behaves at the moment, but also how his behavior has changed in response to injury or illness. When life changes from a pleasure to a burden, that is the time for the horse to be put down.

Okay, what this all really translates to is that some of us riders like to take the easy way out. We like to stick with what we are comfortable doing and not risk “rocking the boat” or more specifically “hitting the dirt!” What we are guilty of doing is creating dumb horses… dumb horses and dumber riders! We don’t challenge our minds or our horses minds because we stick to the same ole easy routine…We don’t ask our horses to think!

Clinton Anderson refers to the horse as having two minds:
1. Mind #1=The everyday ho hum routine mindless mind. (what is familiar)
2. Mind #2=The Oh crap what is that? It’s time to run! (The Flight/Prey instinct)

The flight instinct is the predominant natural horse instinct. So the trick to a good well-rounded horse is to get them to overcome this flight instinct and use their “thinking mind.” Using the thinking side of the brain is not a natural response, but it’s something a horse can develop and enhance. Horses develop this side of their brain by being challenged with new stimuli and tasks. Why not take your hunter out on trail rides… and laugh at those weenies who snub their noses at trail riding as being “not real work” They are usually the one’s most in need of a good trail ride; bock, bock BOOOOCKKK! Tell em’ your eating chicken for dinner and go enjoy yourself and your horse!

Learn many of the secrets the professional instructors use before you ever put your foot in the stirrup. Imagine – trail riding in the hills, mountains or the beach. Enjoying the thrill of riding, handling your horse and fulfilling that dream.

Act on that DREAM of riding – start soon with Horseback riding lessons!  You’ll be glad you did

Hygiene is Very Important for You and Your Horse

A horse inside a box stall
Image via Wikipedia

Owning a horse is something to be proud of and can be a little demanding but if you love your horses you won’t mind.

It is obvious to say that owning a horse isn’t cheap what with the stables, equipment and food all costing a lot of money.

Of course on top of paying to keep your horse warm and fed you may also be paying for riding lessons and perhaps even someone to look after your horse on the days you are not there. There is one thing that money cannot buy and that is the connection you have with your horse. You may need to do some bonding.

There is something that has been left out of this for a specific reason. Although the cleanliness of you horses textiles may not come into your head first it is very important indeed? The thing is, if you wash these in the wrong way or with normal laundry equipment they may look clean but there is a possibility that it isn’t as clean as it looks. If these textiles are not washed in the correct way they could pass on some nasty fungal infections. A clean blanket is a certain sign that your horse is well kept which is useful when it comes to competitions.

Is there a way round this to make sure the textiles are as clean as they can be? Well there are special washing machines available for uses like this one. A Commercial laundry machine is perhaps what is needed here to make sure that you and your horse are safe from anything nasty that can lay in wait on the textiles you use.

Of course this cleanliness does not have to be for an individual if you are in need of something to do the job faster in a small business then it could be worth looking into getting one of those commercial dishwashers as they could be what your company may need to improve productivity.

The software requires no knowledge of html to use. In fact, it is not even an HTML editor, but an HTML generator. You don’t even have to know there is HTML used. Just put images, text and other object on your page and your website is ready! You CAN however add any existing HTML to your page using the advanced page and object HTML tools.

Other traditional programs use a document “word” method for layout, where you can not pick up objects and drag them where you want them to go on the web page. With the new 90 second website software, you can drag and drop the objects anywhere you want. Giving you total control over the layout. It even let’s you put objects on top or below other objects!

Traditional HTML editors use Dynamic Page Layout , which means that the first object on the page will also determine the position of the second object. Resizing or moving the first object will affect the complete layout of the page. You can’t overlap objects when using Dynamic Page Layout.

The software generates a Fixed Page Layout. The objects on page have a fixed position which is not affected by other objects. This also allows you to overlap objects and give you more control over the layout of the site.

Horse racing oddity

Newmarket, Suffolk in the UK is just sixty miles from north of London. It is famous for horse racing and known as The Home of Horse Racing. Some of the well known jockeys call Newmarket home and the racing grounds are one of the most expensive in the world.

It is located on Suffolk and Cambridge borders. It is a great place for shopping too. You can buy almost anything from antiques, animals to music. It is a vibrant town and the horse races add to the glamor. There are races that run all round the year and its all about the races here. There are summer races, races in July and even family races.

However, these figures are slightly misleading as a number of trainers have avoided the race with three-year-olds in recent years and you only have to go back to the mid-80’s, where seven of the eight winners between 1985-92 were from the minimum age group. Alamshar was the last three-year-old to win the race in 2003 and there could be a few younger horses turn up this time around.

A number of professionals believe the subject to be too complex to deal with all at once, so they choose to specialise in specific aspects of horse racing such as National Hunt, flat etc. This approach has a high degree of common sense attached to it as on some days there could be five or six different meetings of anywhere up to 40 races. Chances are that any type of horse racing system you encounter will have filtering mechanisms built in in the form of rules, for things like avoiding handicaps or two-year-old races which can cut your workload down to 15 to 20 races making the process more easily manageable.

In the past serious horse racing gamblers needed to pay a large amount of money for a good quality form book but nowadays this information can be found for free on the racing Post website. There is no reason why you should not be able to get all the information you require for free if you look around and put in a little bit of research and effort. This will pay off in the long term as you learn your skill.

If you treat horse racing betting as a hobby in which you get enjoyment from having a little flutter then you are not likely to succeed in any big way. Only when treating the subject seriously as a business can you ever hope to succeed. Most horse racing system out there are a load of rubbish and do not work. However if you do your research you will find there are a few systems which actually do work in combination with a good solid staking plan methodology

It's My Life Equestrian Music Video

I find this a big topic with a lot of new horse owners and those thinking of becoming horse owners. Most experienced horse people will discourage doing this if you are new to horses, and with good reason. Though I won’t say its impossible either as I am one that was green & purchased learned how to train green horse, but I had a great teacher. Well if this is you and you want to in devour in the world of horse training and horsemanship. Then this article should be of some help to you.

Another important thing you need to do to protect yourself when you ride a horse is wear a boot or sturdy shoe with a good heel. This will keep your foot from sliding through the stirrups. You want to be sure you can get your foot free if an accident would occur. Never wear sneakers, sandals, or ride your horse barefoot. Toe Stoppers are great for keeping your feet in the right position. They also prevent your feet from getting stuck in the stirrups.

Jackets

Riding jackets in equestrian competitions should be fitted and not restrict the free movement of the arms. As you would expect, different jackets are available for men and women riders. Most jackets have a vent at the back that helps it to lie smoothly at the back and sit neatly over the back of the saddle. Broadly, there are three different kinds of jackets:

Hacking Jacket, which is a tweed style jacket in various colours navy, brown and green Hunting Jacket, which could also be a tweed style jacket or plain black or navy it could also be a red jacket meant for hunt masters.

Show Jacket, which is a single-coloured jacket, often black or navy blue.

Be careful not to let the buckles hit your horse’s legs. The girth or cinch needs to be secured once the saddle is situated correctly. Do this on the off-side first and be very careful the girth doesn’t hit the legs of your horse. Watch that your horse doesn’t kick you while you’re adjusting his saddle.

Gloves

As a part of competition clothing, a rider should own a good pair of original gloves as well as an everyday general pair of gloves:

Original leather gloves are to be worn while riding for competition.

Everyday general riding gloves are worn whilst hacking, schooling, training and yard duties they are usually made from cotton, crochet, artificial leather and breathable materials.

So I say to you beginners gather as much information as you can and prepare yourself, before you just go out and purchase a horse without any formal knowledge and think your going to train it

Horses - Wild horses

For most of us, one of the big factors affecting our answer to the question “Do you really want a horse?” is money. What is the average cost of owning horses? Well the fact of the matter is I can’t give you a definite answer due to the fact that cost depends on many different things. Owning a horse can be a very expensive hobby or be managed on a very modest budget. It not so much the initial cost as it is the cost for upkeep

Owning horses or a horse can be a very enjoyable, exciting, educational experience, for the young and old. Or it can also be a dangerous unpleasant experience if the proper knowledge of horse keeping in the suburbs is not pursued previous to buying a horse.

To many people, horses are simply beautiful creatures. But prospective horse owners should look beyond the appearances and know that there are many differences to horses many different responsibilities to owning a horse in urban areas as opposed to rural & agricultural areas.

-You need to learn about buying and how to buy a horse.
– Horse care & handling
– You also need knowledge of horse equipment.

You must also have the proper facility or accommodations for your horse if you have a small piece of land. You’re going to need a proper horse barn or shed, proper turnout area or run, also how are you gonna keep your horse or horses exercised?

It depends on whose trimming and shoeing your horse, once again you get what you pay for. Lastly if you want to supplement your horse the cost can be anywhere from $10 – $30 for a 50lb bag of grain or feed. If you decide to keep your horse at home, all these things you have to consider and more. I hope I have been somewhat of a help to you, because there is so much more to consider depending on your needs

animal bedding

Why use recycled-cardboard horse bedding? Largely because of the great benefit to horses, it’s Green, and quite practical for the owner. In our individual attempts to consistently take the high road remaining conscious of our actions and how we affect one another, recycled-cardboard horse bedding and animal bedding is a win-win-win.

There are multifarious advantages of horse bedding and your horse receives them all. Horse bedding supports overall health, cleanliness, and comfort. The same holds for animal bedding meant for pets and other farm animals as well.

We have found the greatest health benefit with horse bedding to be the impact on the respiratory system. Actually, because our recycled cardboard is dust-free you and those in contact with the horse will experience respiratory relief as well. A conservative fifty percent estimate indicates British horses experience respiratory issues in good part because of the dust and mould spores found in traditional bedding materials of wood shavings and straw.

If your horse is affected by Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (C.O.P.D.) or displays symptoms of coughing, discharge of mucus from the nasal passages, labored breathing, or sluggishness, trying recycled-cardboard horse bedding would be a prudent decision.

The use of recycled-cardboard horse bedding also makes cleaning the stall a much easier and more pleasant task. Water seeks its own level, as does horse urine. This being so, the liquid flows from the top layers of the horse bedding to the bottom leaving the upper-most layers of the horse bedding dry and virtually odour free.

To muck out the stable, throw the top layer of dry horse bedding up onto the walls until you reach the saturated layer. This layer needs to be removed and bits of food, hay, and the like that get stuck in here need to be taken out. To freshen the stable, add a bit of new horse bedding to the floor. You would need about one or two bales of new horse bedding per stable each week.

What shall you do with the collected muck? The used horse bedding decomposes at a greater rate than wood shavings or straw. Depending upon your property, you may want to till it into the soil where it will complete breaking down or use it as mulch. The Green aspect of our horse and animal bedding material is an added bonus to an almost perfect product further reducing the carbon hoof print.

Another point worth mentioning is that the recycled-cardboard in the horse and animal bedding passes through high levels of quality check for cleanliness and consistency of end product. The cardboard cutting process leaves the bedding in irregular shapes trapping air leaving the bed warm and comfortable.

Horse bedding can easily be laid from the bale onto the floor. It seldom sticks to the horses or to your clothing, or blankets. Because it is so dry, when a horse finds a piece in its mouth they spit it out. Last but certainly not least, rats and rabbits love animal bedding; and it’s been shown to almost eliminate feather plucking in poultry.

This is our individual attempt to take the high road remaining conscious of our actions and how we affect one another. Come, be a part of the movement.
