horse supply

Taking proper care of a horse takes a lot of patience and understanding. In fact, most people don’t know how to care for horses. Not only do they need the basic, like food and shelter, they also need the proper horse tack supplies. Saddles, saddle blankets, horse blankets, horse boots/shoes, and other horse supply products are just some of the essential things that equines need.

Also known as horse shoes, they are generally designed to protect the feet of horses. This is a very simple notion but requires quite a serious approach. Generally, aluminum and steel are used in making these types of shoes. Most of them have an underneath grooves that also provide a better grip. The grooves also make the horse shoes lighter. But did you know that the front part of these shoes is circular in shape and the backs are diamond shaped?

Aside from being sturdy, another factor includes the trimming of the hooves for proper fitting of the shoes. As well, there are four important aspects in shoeing a horse. These are the balance, the support, the shape and the expansion. Such evaluations should be done at least a week or two after a shoeing job. Although it might sound difficult, you only have to have a pencil and a level ground where your horse can stand so that you can evaluate the said factors.

Understand that horse boots/shoes should not be worn all the time. In fact, during very cold winter seasons, it is ideal to remove those shoes from the horses. After all, you won’t be riding horses in the middle of a snow anyway. However, winters vary from one place to another, so if your local climate is not that cold, even if its winter, then try adding pads under the boots. This can help with proper blood circulation of the horse, while improving his expansions and movements.

Horse boots are indeed very important for horses. That is why you should seek the services of a farrier, who is a professional that creates boots/shoes for horses. This means that he is highly-knowledgeable, as far as finding the most ideal shoes for your horse is concerned. Take time to discuss with him the basic things you need to know. Taking care of a horse indeed takes a lot of effort, but as long as you know the necessary things, horsemanship can also be very rewarding.

Horses: Choosing Bits by Ron Meredith

Canadian Horse (Cheval Canadien) Police HorseImage by appaIoosa via FlickrBits are one of the most MythUnderstood pieces of horse equipment man has ever invented. The things that people think they’re supposed to do with a bit in a horse’s mouth are unbelievable. All to often, the human take on the situation is that a horse is a big animal, therefore the pressures needed to control it must be big and strong. That’s a myth. A rocket engine is controlled by tiny bits of information being fed one at a time by a computer. Each of those bits is either a “zero” or a “one”. The bits flow in a pattern called a program that the rocket understands. Same thing with a horse. All it needs are tiny bits of information fed to it with the right timing to get with the program.

There are very few surfaces where the bit can apply pressure. So it takes some pretty complex applications of pressure to those few points to create complex communication. The bit must be shaped in such a way and fit properly within the mouth so horse is able to understand what the communication is. Therefore a bit must be both directional and horse logical. It must not cause any injury which will result in temporary numbness.

The area in the horse’s mouth where a bit communicates our pressures most effectively to the horse is called the bars. These gaps between the front teeth and the back teeth on either side of the jaw consist of tissue-covered, pressure-sensitive cartilage. Between the bars, the bit lays across and presses against the horse’s tongue. Depending on its shape and adjustment, a bit can also put pressure on the horse’s lips and on the roof of its mouth. Pressures on the lips are the least effective because the lips are an unstable surface and easily injured.

The first thing to look at on any device you put in the horse’s mouth is its contact area–the size of the area that actually touches the horse and transmits pressure or feel. When trainers talk about “pounds of pressure” on a bit, they are really talking about pounds per square inch of pressure over this contact area. The thinner the bit, the less contact area it has and the greater the pounds per square in of pressure. The thicker the bit, the greater the contact area and the lower the pounds per square inch of pressure.

Put another way, the thinner the bit, the more noticeable any pressure on the bars will be. With a thicker bit, the same amount of rein pressure will be less noticeable. So the effective size of the mouthpiece is the first thing to look at because it will determine how noticeable the pressure you apply will be. Rough bit surfaces such as twists reduce the area where pressure is felt much like rough tread reduces a tire’s surface area where it meets the road.

The second thing to look at is whether the mouthpiece is straight or whether it is shaped so it relieves the pressure on the tongue. If the bit is straight, the horse’s tongue absorbs some of the pressure and the horse will feel less pressure on the bars. The bars are the only places in the mouth we can use to communicate an understandable directional pressure. If the mouthpiece is hinged or grooved so it relieves pressure on the tongue, the bit is more noticeable on the bars of the mouth and gives more directional guidance.

A tongue groove and a port are not the same thing. A tongue groove is a shallow, raised indentation in the center of the mouthpiece only high enough to relieve tongue pressure. It allows the bit’s pressures to be felt on the bars. A port is a raised groove or attached spoon so tall that it puts pressure on the roof of the mouth when the shanks of the bit are rotated by pulling on the reins. If you could park a little boat in it, it’s a port. A port is severe and nondirectional and cannot teach the horse anything.

The third thing to look at is whether the bit has leverage. The way to measure leverage is to compare the distance from the mouthpiece to where the reins attach to the distance from the mouthpiece to the curb chain (or strap). Most curb bits have a 3:1 leverage ratio. That means if you put 10 pounds of pull on the reins, the horse will feel 30 pounds of pressure squeezing his mouth.

Leverage decreases the amount of time it takes for the horse to feel bit pressure. If you have a bit with 3:1 leverage, the horse feels 10 pounds of pressure three times faster than he would if you applied 10 pounds of pressure with a non-leverage bit like a snaffle. To make this kind of bit pressure understandable and horse logical you would have to soften the pressure to reward the horse three times as quickly as you would with a non-leverage bit. Because of this exaggerated pressure and release, curb bits impede true feel and understanding between you and your horse.

Curbs are also nondirectional. Their pressure is felt as a clamping between the horse’s chin and the bars of his mouth, and therefore can convey minimal direction to the horse. If you use a chain, the pressure is more noticeable underneath the chin. If you use a thick leather strap, the pressure is more noticeable on the bars of the mouth. In most cases, curb bits are used as a signaling device rather than as a training device to help the horse learn to shape himself correctly.

One of the biggest mistakes everybody makes is picturing the bit by itself. The bit is only part of the overall corridor of aids you use to create the shapes you want the horse to take. You do not want the bit to be louder than your legs or seat. You don’t need a big bit to get the horse’s attention and you don’t need a big bit to get the horse stopped. You just need to know how to use a bit to make it understandable and directional to the horse.

Whenever you see a horse fighting the bit, he has lost feeling for the rest of the aids. It is just like two people who speak different languages raising their voices louder and louder in an effort to be understood. Rhythm, relaxation and repetition are the cornerstones of good training.

Important Stable Supplies For Your Horses

horse tack supply

If ever there is a chance of you considering ownership of a horse, then you need to understand that this is not an easy responsibility. Besides providing food and shelter, a lot of equipment and materials are needed to keep them strong and healthy. Stable supplies are very important when it comes to taking care of horses.

With so many tack supply and equipment choices these days, you might get confused as to what to consider first. In any situation, saddle blankets are one of the most important. Aside from keeping the horses warm, they can also protect them from insects and flies, thus keeping your horse healthy and clean. Horse blankets greatly provide these animals with better blood circulation too.

When they are already in the stable, these blankets play a very important role. When choosing blankets, be sure to go for the ones that are durable, breathable, water proof, and made from the highest quality of materials. However, keep in mind that horses can withstand even the coldest of temperatures. It is ideal, therefore, to consider the weight of the blanket and the weather conditions in your area before you decide on which horse tack equipment item is suitable for your animal.

Horse fences are the second most important stable supplies or more correctly stable accessories. For ranchers and estate owners who want their stables to be secured and safe, proper fencing is very important. Keeping horses away from unwanted predators is crucial and the only solution is strong and reliable fencing construction. There are some factors that should be considered, such as the number of animals to be fenced, the nature of the field, and the budget. Additionally, the age of the horses in the pasture is just as important. Young, untrained, abusive, and highly spirited horses need special fencing. When it comes to horse fencing, there are basically three types of approaches, which include rail horse fencing, wire mesh horse fencing, and electric horse fencing. Whichever your preference is, it is still best to have a horse-care professional around to help you make the correct decision.

When visiting your local horse tack shop, consider purchasing tack trunks to store your stable supplies. You can easily organize your stable accessories in this way. This can help keep your horse tools from becoming lost. With so many things to consider about horsemanship, be sure you know how to properly care for the animals. The city of Carlisle is the largest of all settlements that you will find in Cumbria, England. Along with being the administrative centre for the city and the County of Cumbria, it also houses the main campus for the University of Cumbria. Carlisle vacations are ideal for those who would like to discover more about this historic city.

Actually getting to Carlisle could not be any easier. The main roads that links this city with not only the Southern part of England but also to Scotland are the M6 (for the South) and M74/A74 (takes you towards Glasgow and the Northern part of England). However, actually getting around the city itself in a car can prove quite eventful especially when the rush hours are in full flow.

If you do not intend driving to the city then there are regular train services that come directly in to its railway station. Trains not only arrive from London, but also from Newcastle, Leeds and Glasgow. However, the train that comes from Glasgow does come via the town of Dumfries.

When you actually arrive in the city for your vacation, there is plenty of things for one to do and see whilst staying there. One of the main attractions of Carlisle is the historic cathedral.

The castle has been situated at the Western end of the city on the Anglo Scottish border for more than 900 years. Since it was first built, it has been witness to many conflicts and sieges and yet today you can explore the chambers, stairways and dungeons that remain. The legendary “Licking Stones” can be found in the dungeons. Legend has it that Jacobite prisoners were so thirsty that they would lick the stones in an effort to get some water to help keep them alive.

Carlisle cathedral dominates the city’s sky line and can be seen from almost anywhere in the city, which has been the case since it was founded in 1122 AD. The crypt’s decoration is exquisite. If you take the time to actually go into the crypy, you’ll be greeted by a display that covers over a thousand years of Christian history throughout Cumbria.

However, if you are looking for a little more excitement when visiting Carlisle then a day or an evening at the races should be considered. The racecourse is located on the outskirts of the town and is set in beautiful countryside and this is why the course undulates somewhat. Throughout the year top quality horse racing events take place with the National Hunt ones taking place between September and April and the flat races taking place between April and August.

Carlisle vacations are ideal for those who are looking for a quiet romantic time away with their partner. But they are also the place for families who are looking for a little adventure and fun during their Carlisle holiday.

Her Helmet Saved Her Life

HARMONY:  Her Helmet Saved Her Life
By Jan Dawson
President, AAHS

[reproduced from Spring 2002 Caution:Horses]

The trainer had just finished schooling an 8-year old, experienced horse.  They had completed a highly successful show season a couple of months before and were moving on into some new territory including flying changes and some more sophisticated lateral work.  The horse worked well and had worked hard, so the pair headed for the trail to cool out.

About half a mile from the arena they crossed a dry creek bed without incident, taking a path they had taken many times before.  They often had schooling sessions in the pasture so the arena work would not be so boring.

That was the last thing the rider remembered until she woke up in her house and heard someone on the telephone.  Her first thought was, “Oh my, here I am in the middle of the day, lying in bed, fully dressed with my spurs on and I still have horses to ride.”  The voice on the phone was the 911 dispatcher who wanted to know if she needed an ambulance after her fall.  “I guess so,” she said, “since I don’t really remember much about riding the horse.”

The doctor in the emergency room told her that if she had not been wearing her helmet she would have been a fatality; as it was she had a mild concussion.

That was January 23, 2002 and I still have no memory of the incident.  The ground was all torn up where my horse blew up and all I can think is that something must have really jumped up underneath him.  It was too early for snakes and he isn’t afraid of them anyway.  Not much bothers him.  Ground bees?  Who knows?

I sent my helmet in to the distributor thinking that it would find nothing and that I was really being a wimp.  All that was on the outside was a little smudge.  Little did I know.  The engineers determined from analyzing the material inside the helmet that I took a 1400 G-force blow on a 2 square inch area of my head.  They estimated that the helmet reduced the blow to 450 G-forces.  The helmet definitely saved my life or at the very least kept me from drooling on my shirt in a vegetative state for the remainder.

I have been used to wearing my helmet for nearly 10 years now to the point that sometimes I will catch myself still wearing it when I drive to town.  I wear an Aussie Outback and find that even in the summer my head doesn’t sweat.  However, before this accident I have begun to look longingly at the cute visors my friends wear.  Some visors have dressage horses on them. Other visors can match your tee shirt or your britches.  I had begun to think that both of my show horses were too old and had too much training to really commit an atrocity.  In a million years I would have never believed that this horse could have been made to blow up that badly.  Yet all over the country I teach just the opposite. A horse is always a horse and will always be a horse and horses are always unpredictable and can react suddenly.

I still have no memory of the incident.  The effects of the accident are still around but much less and not as funny.  I no longer call home several times to tell my husband that I have arrived at my destination safely.  I can remember now that I have already done it.  I have stopped calling people two and three times for the same thing – that got a little embarrassing.

Forty-eight hours after the accident I was presenting two workshops to the American Youth Horse council and I had to begin by telling the audience that if I started talking gibberish to just stop me and I would start over.  The talks apparently made sense but I do not remember giving them.  The periods of disorientation have subsided and I no longer am dizzy when I ride.  Do I expect this horse to do this again?  Of  course

Would I have been better off in a sell-worked arena?  Sure, but will I now only ride in controlled situations on soft, well-worked surfaces?   No way.  Will I ever consider trading my helmet for a visor or cap because it looks cool?  When pigs fly!

Unfriendly Friends of Your Horse: Parasites

Manure, a field in Randers in DenmarkImage via WikipediaWhen you own animals, your main responsibility is to make sure that they are healthy and that their lives are full of joy and happiness, and not sorrow and pain. One of the things that will allow you to do this with any animal is to make sure that you are providing them with a safe and comfortable place that is clean and free of germs to live their lives. With your horse, there is no exception to the rule. It is often hard for horses to get sick if they are properly taken care of, but if you find yourself or your horse with a dirty stall or a living quarters that is not up to snuff, you might find that parasites are abound, and when it comes to your horse, parasites are not good at all.

When you have a horse, you know that he is naturally strong, and usually won’t have any complaints for you. As long as he has a safe and warm place to live in the cold months, and shelter from the heat in the hot months, and as long as you provide him with food and water that is clean and safe, he’ll be able to be your companion and work for you for years and years. Horses can be very loyal and they can be great animals to keep, as long as you do it right.

However, if you aren’t providing your horse with a clean living space, you are going to find that your horse might have a problem with parasites. This is something that can be very real, and can be very dangerous for your horse. You have to be sure that you aren’t giving your horse any chances to get parasites, which is why it is so important to keep your horse’s living quarters clean and free of debris.

The most common parasites are going to happen when your horse is living in a place that is dirty or not cleaned regularly. These parasites are going to live in the feces of your horse, and if your horse steps in them, he will be able to bring them right back into his body. Also, if your horse’s stall is dirty and not taken care of, this is a breeding ground for parasites, and they will have a chance to attack your horse. If your horse gets parasites, you’ll need to talk to your vet about the best way to help your horse before they get really sick.

Cleanliness and Your Horse’s Health

Size varies greatly among horse breeds, as wit...Image via WikipediaOne of the most important factors in how healthy your horse ends up being is cleanliness. You might not believe it, but it is something that is completely true. In order to have your horse live a very healthy life style, it needs to be able to maintain a life in which it is clean and in which it can have access to all of the things that help it to be happy and healthy.

When you have a horse, you are going to want to work hard to make sure he is happy. This means that he needs to have fresh straw and food, as well as fresh water. You also have to be sure that you are providing your horse with plenty of room to run, and plenty of rest when he has been working. All of these things are important, but they are also impacted by one single factor – the cleanliness of the stable and your horse in general. Not having a clean area, and not having a clean life can lead to all kinds of problems within all aspects of your horse. If his food and water are not fresh and clean, he is going to have health problems. If his stall is not clean, he is in danger of developing other illnesses as well. Overall cleanliness is very important if you want your horse to be as happy and healthy as he could be.

Remember, there are many factors that you have to consider when you are looking at your horse’s cleanliness and his health. The food and water must be clean and fresh, but this does no good if you don’t provide them in containers that are also clean. If you are giving your horse clean food and water in dirty containers, he is going to get sick.

His stall also must be clean at all times, and this is something that only you can do. Even if you hire someone to clean out your stalls, you have to be sure that the person you have hired is doing the right work. It simply does no good for your horse to be living in dirty quarters.

Along with this, you have to be sure that you are grooming and cleaning your horse as often as he needs to be groomed and cleaned. This is something that is more vital than you could possible imagine, because if your horse isn’t clean himself, he isn’t going to be very happy.
